Guerin Catholic gave its home fans a big win Friday night, cruising past Heritage Christian 48-7 at the Eagles Nest.
The Golden Eagles were never threatened by Heritage, scoring 20 points in the first quarter. Zac Sutton got the first points on the board for Guerin by catching a 17-yard pass from Christian Gelov.
Gelov scored himself a few minutes later on a three-yard run, then Dylan Crossen got the third touchdown of the period at the 2:00 mark with a three-yard run of his own. Nathan Friedman made two extra point kicks.
Crossen scored two more touchdowns, one a 10-yarder in the second quarter, and the other a 68-yard sprint early in the third quarter. With three seconds left in the half, Gelov found Nick Demas for a 34-yard pass play, and that put Guerin Catholic ahead 34-0 at halftime. Friedman made both of his extra point kicks in the second period.
The Golden Eagles’ defense stepped up with a third-quarter safety, which gave Guerin a 42-0 lead after the third quarter. Cam Murray made an 11-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter to complete the Golden Eagles’ scoring. Murray had the most rushes, carrying the ball 13 times for 78 yards, while Crossen gained the most ground, with 128 yards in eight carries.
Gelov threw for 180 yards on 8-of-14 passing, including two touchdowns. Sutton and Demas each had two receptions.
Guerin Catholic is now 2-1 for the season and goes back on the road next Friday to play at Indianapolis Howe. The Hornets are off to a 3-0 start, with wins over Osceola Grace, Rock Creek Academy and Indiana School for the Deaf.
