Boys tennis: Royals pick up two HCC victories

The Hamilton Southeastern boys tennis team won two big Hoosier Crossroads Conference meets this week on the road.
On Wednesday, the Royals took on Brownsburg and won 3-2. The match came down to No. 3 singles, were HSE senior Elias Yarling clinched the match by winning a second-set tiebreak. The final score was 6-1, 7-6 (1).
No. 2 singles Andrew Orme won his match 6-0, 6-0, while No. 2 doubles Mahek Chougule and McGuire Wolfe took the No. 2 doubles match 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
On Thursday, Southeastern beat Avon 4-1. At No. 1 singles, freshman Aiden De Witt shut out his opponent 6-0, 6-0.
“Aiden really hit the ball well tonight, served big, and constructed some great points,” said Royals coach Kirk Webber. “It was a great match for him.”
Orme won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. No. 1 doubles Matthew Parker and Matt Meyer took that match 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the team victory, then Chougule and Wolfe scored a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles.
The Royals are 4-1 in the conference and 4-2 overall. Southeastern will play at the Fort Wayne Carroll Invite on Saturday.

Hamilton Heights dropped a tough Hoosier Conference meet to Northwestern 4-1 on Thursday.
The Huskies’ No. 1 doubles team of Nic Rice and Josh Russell got their team’s lone win, 6-3, 6-4. Heights’ junior varsity team lost 6-4, with victories from Kal Colter and Colin Weber in singles and Eli VanHaaren/Tanner Maynard and Drew Pennington/Erik Malott in doubles.
“Tonight was a lot of fun to watch,” said Huskies coach Justin Davis. “The competition was great, each match was a true battle, it was a tough loss for us, but overall a great matchup for our players on both varsity and JV. There were things that some of our players have never seen before, we had guys learn from previous games or the previous set to come back and play much better throughout the rest of the match, and players who changed their game plan mid-match to benefit themselves. Those are hard to find at the high school level. A great win for our No. 1 doubles team of Nic and Josh; they are playing some strong tennis and are playing very well together.”
