Everyone was preparing for a hot time at the Hamilton County cross country meet Tuesday at the Chanquapin Ridge course in Noblesville.
The race was pushed back 45 minutes so the runners could race after the heat of the afternoon. Once everything was finished, Carmel had defended both of its team championships and an individual title.
The Greyhounds won the girls race easily, with a score of 32 points. The host Millers edged out Hamilton Southeastern for third place, 71 to 76, with Fishers placing fourth.
Carmel’s Phoebe Bates was the individual girls champion for the second year in a row. Bates cruised to victory in a time of 18 minutes, 12.09 seconds, over 47 seconds ahead of second place.
“I ended up feeling really good and I was very pleased with my time,” said Bates. She was also happy the Greyhounds won again in the team standings.
“I think we’re looking a lot stronger this year,” said Bates. “We got a lot of younger girls, so that’s a plus. I think they’ll be a big part of our team this year.”
Four other Carmel girls landed in the top 10. Abby Parker finished sixth, Lindsey Roper was seventh, Jamie Klavon eighth and Roni Ledzema 10th.
“I was real pleased with how they raced tonight,” said Greyhounds coach Andy Dalton. “It’s going to be hot and humid, but it’s August. It’s Indiana. You’re going to get races and the girls, they did exactly what they were supposed to do. I was interested to see how we would match up against some of these really strong teams in the county, and we looked real strong today.
The Millers also looked strong, with five girls finishing in the top 20. Bella Sharples-Gordon led the way by taking fifth place, while Sophie Reichard finished in 12th.
Meanwhile, Lulu Black had an outstanding race for the Royals, taking second place in a time of 18:59.97. Ellie Pedersen finished in 11th place, with Lilly Cummins placing 14th.
Fishers scored 95 points to take fourth as a team. Miya Wai landed in ninth place, with Abby Carter taking 15th.
Guerin Catholic was fifth and Hamilton Heights sixth, but both teams had a runner place in the top four. The Huskies’ Maria Mitchell finished in third place, with the Golden Eagles’ Ellie Schroeder taking fourth.
Carmel’s boys team held off Fishers to win that division, scoring 36 points to the Tigers’ 49.
The Greyhounds had two runners in the top four – Patrick Campbell was third (16:17.96) and Grant Moon fourth (16:24.10) – and two more reach the top 10. Calvin Bates placed eighth and Thomas Gastineau took 10th.
Despite the heat, Carmel coach Colin Altevogt pointed out that his top two runners ran their best times of their career.
“I think that set the tone for us,” said Altevogt. “The rest of our guys were obviously quite a bit off their best time ever, but I think a really good start to the season.”
Ethan Meyer led the Tigers by placing second overall in a time of 16:17.76. Will Clark placed sixth and Dylan Arive finished 12th.
Hamilton Southeastern finished third as a team with 88 points and had two top 10 runners: Grant Wilson took seventh and Eric Swinson was ninth.
Noblesville placed fourth in the team standings by scoring 112 points. Travis Hickner had a solid race for the Millers, taking fifth place.
Westfield finished in fifth as a team; Mahamet Djour led the Shamrocks by taking 20th place.
The overall winner was Guerin Catholic’s Quinn Gallagher, who ran the race in 16:05.79. Gallagher finished as the runner-up last year. The Golden Eagles were sixth as a team.
“All I was trying to do was put in a hard K on the fourth K,” said Gallagher. “We didn’t really care about the time, it was just go on effort.”
