Softball roundup: Fast start leads Tigers to victory

Fishers started fast on Monday and that led the host Tigers to a 7-5 all-county win over Carmel.

Fishers began with three runs in the first inning. Frankie Jackson singled in Cate Summerfield and Kennedy Shockley for the Tigers’ first two runs, then Adrianne Cook stole home plate. Saylor Roberts tripled in Summerfield for a second-inning run, giving Fishers a 4-0 lead.

The Greyhounds got on the board in the third inning. Riley Petrites led off with a double, then Jayden Kleiner doubled her home before scoring herself on an error.

Carmel tied the game in the top of the fifth inning. Kleiner got home on Chloe Junkersfeld’s RBI groundout, then Winni Owens singled in Ellie Goddard. But Fishers got the lead back right away in the bottom of the fifth: Cook slammed a three-run home run, also scoring Summerfield and Shockley.

The Hounds scored one more run in the sixth inning. Megan Pike got home on Kleiner’s RBI fielder’s choice.

Summerfield, Shockley, Cook and Jackson all totaled two hits. Joni Oliver got the pitching win.

Kleiner had two doubles during a 3-for-4 night. Owens had two hits. Chelsea Bennett struck out four in 5.1 innings.

Fishers is 14-6 and plays at Franklin Central tonight in a Hoosier Crossroads Conference game. Carmel is 10-11 and hosts Oak Hill Friday in a varsity-only game.

Sheridan used a late rally to win a 7-6 home Hoosier Heartland Conference game over Tri-Central on Monday.

The Trojans scored a run in the first inning. The Blackhawks got on the board with two runs in the second inning. Ellie Eaton doubled in Anna Rusk, then Amiyah Doss batted in Eaton.

Tri-Central tied the game in the fourth inning, then took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth. Makenzy Terry led off the fifth inning with a triple and scored on Rusk’s RBI groundout, tying the contest at 3-3.

The Trojans put up three runs in the top of the sixth, but Sheridan answered again, scoring four in the bottom of the inning. Doss doubled in Abby Dallas, then Hayleigh Kemp smacked a two-run double to score Doss and Adria Jump. Kemp later scored on a wild pitch. The Hawks clinched the game with a three-up, three-down seventh inning.

Doss had a perfect night, hitting 4-for-4. Eaton and Dallas both had two hits. Starting pitcher Jump threw seven strikeouts in five innings, while Norah Adams pitched the last two innings and got the win.

The Hawks are 2-3 in the conference and 3-9 overall. Sheridan travels to Eastern on Wednesday to continue HHC play.

Noblesville lost a 5-3 game Monday at Yorktown.

Reese Newsom hit a leadoff home run that tied the game in the fourth inning. The Tigers scored a fifth-inning run and three more in the sixth. Bella Hughes hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning, also scoring Kate Ringholz.

Newsom was 2-for-3 at the plate, while Addison Retzinger hit a double. Roslyn Ervin threw a complete game, striking out six.

The Millers are 11-6 and play an HCC game tonight at Brownsburg.

Hamilton Southeastern dropped an eight-inning home HCC game to Brownsburg 4-1 on Monday.

The game was scoreless after the regulation seven innings, so all of the runs were scored in the eighth. Jaleah McCarter doubled in Lilly Palmer for the Royals’ run.

McCarter was 3-for-4 at the plate. Palmer also hit a double. Grace Swedarsky pitched all eight innings, striking out 12.

Southeastern is 3-2 in the conference and 14-4 overall. The Royals continue HCC play tonight at Westfield.

Guerin Catholic fell to Speedway in a 17-2, five-inning home game on Monday.

The Golden Eagles scored both of their runs in the second inning. Aggie Waymouth stole home plate, then Riley Fredericks scored when Kate Brady reached on an error.

Gia Crishon had two hits, including a triple. She pitched all five innings, throwing seven strikeouts.

Guerin Catholic is 5-6 and plays Wednesday at Pike.
