Hippodrome Theater to be new site of local history . . .
Many residents of the Sheridan community are aware that the Sheridan Historical Society has purchased what used to be the old Hippodrome Theater and is now converting it into a new museum.
The present museum – located catty-corner across the street from the Hippodrome building – is too small to accommodate all the materials that have been collected over the years, and there is no display space available for special exhibits.
The new museum is expected to be open by late Summer or early Fall 2019. It will contain space for up to a half-dozen permanent and rotating special exhibit alcoves depicting Sheridan’s history. One of the permanent alcove displays will be dedicated to the Larry Hobbs basketball era, roughly 1948 to 1962. Plans call for lots of pictures and lots of authentic basketball memorabilia.
The Society already has many items to be used in the Hobbs exhibit, but there is a belief that many Sheridan residents may have other things in their possession that would make great additions to the display.
With that thought in mind, the Historical Society would like residents to dig through their attics or look out in the garage and see if there are any Hobbs era items that could be given to the Society outright or on a long-term basis for inclusion.
This includes items such as varsity letter jackets, player jerseys, score cards, signed basketballs, newspaper articles, pictures and other things of that nature. The items would need to be related to the Hobbs era. Whenever known, displayed items will be given full donor credit.
If you have such items, or think you do, please bring the items by the present museum and talk with us about them. The museum, located at 308 S. Main St. in uptown Sheridan, is open from 1 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday and Friday afternoons.
