The Noblesville and Carmel boys soccer teams played to a 1-1 tie Thursday at the Millers’ field at White River Elementary School.
The Class 3A No. 10 Greyhounds scored first, with Graham Rieg finding the back of the net off an assist by Gavin Buba in the 31st minute. Noblesville answered in the second half, when Gabe Imes sent a 30-yard free kick in for a goal.
With the tie, Carmel is now 0-0-2 for the season, while the Millers are 0-1-1.
“I think today that our shape was much better,” said ‘Hounds coach Shane Schmidt. He said Carmel has been working on its spacing, shape and new formation since its Saturday opener with Zionsville, which also ended in a tie. “I think it’s going to continue to get better and better as we move along in the season,” said Schmidt.
“I thought we moved the ball side-to-side, we had good switches, we had good vertical movement, too,” said Noblesville coach Ken Dollaske. “I’m happy with the tie, but at the same time, I think the way that we played, we could’ve deserved the win as well.”
Playing in its first home game of the season on Thursday, Hamilton Heights beat Pendleton Heights 2-1.
The Huskies scored both of their goals in the first half. The first came at the 18-minute mark, with Zach Clark scoring off an assist from Josh Thorpe. Drew Tomaszewski got the second goal at the 14-minute mark, finishing another assist from Thorpe.
The Arabians scored their lone goal around the halfway point of the second half, but Heights was able to hang on and stayed strong mentally to secure the victory. Caleb Grabarz recorded four saves on the night.
Huskies coach Derrick Dean said Issiac Hickok was the player of the game due to “his solid play and great defense.”
Heights is now 2-0 for the season.
University improved to 2-0 for the year with a 5-0 victory over Lebanon on Thursday.
It was a battle of ranked teams, with the 1A No. 3 Trailblazers winning over the 2A No. 7 Tigers. Sam Gailey scored two goals for University.
On Monday, the ‘Blazers opened their season by beating 1A No. 6 Heritage Christian 3-2. Gailey, Ethan Bandick and Ethan Patel all scored one goal, with Gaily picking up two assists. Bandick and Jacob Masoncup each had one assist.
