Every year the Sheridan Rotary club holds a special dinner event honoring the academic top 10 percent of students in the Sheridan High School graduating senior class. The club was pleased to honor eight young people at this year’s event. In addition, the Rotarians also recognize and honor both the elementary and the secondary teachers of the year.

Historically, Rotarian membership is comprised of successful business and professional people in their communities. And generally speaking, these are individuals whose success began early in lives with the academic success they achieved school. Today’s generation of young people is no different. In all probability, those honored by Sheridan Rotary each year will turn out to be tomorrow’s teachers, doctors, lawyers, business owners and even librarians. Hopefully they will want to become Rotarians someday themselves.

The Sheridan Rotary Club said that part of the success these young students have achieved is due to the dedicated teachers who have devoted their lives to passing knowledge and skills to the next generation. There are many deserving teaching professionals in the school but we only honor two each year and those two for 2018 are kindergarten teacher Angie Viehe and language arts teacher Becky Pitzer. As their principals will tell you, both of these ladies have had positive impacts on each of the eight students being honored as well all the other students passing through their teaching lives.

Education is one of the corner stones of the Rotarian credo. Educational achievement is honored by Sheridan Rotary in a variety of ways including celebrating academic achievement, honoring those in the teaching profession and providing economic support through the awarding of scholarships. And every year Rotary clubs worldwide sponsor exchange student programs that sends students, including American students, to foreign countries for a year of study and travel. Sheridan Rotary is proud and pleased to be a part of that legacy.

Sheridan Rotary meets formally on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 6:15 p.m. for a meal and an interesting guest speaker. The remaining Tuesdays of the month are dedicated to various committee meetings and community projects of various sorts. If you are interested in attending a meeting to find out more about Rotary, please contact any Sheridan Rotary member or come by the public library and talk to Sheridan Rotarian Steve Martin.
