Saturday’s breakfast meeting of the Cicero Kiwanis Club breakfast meeting highlighted the role and function of Hamilton Heights’ Youth Assistance Program advocate, Mary Ann Haymaker, and a wide array of community events and activities scheduled over the next two weeks.
Mary Ann Haymaker, Hamilton Heights Youth Assistance Early Intervention Advocate, was the guest speaker at Saturday’s Cicero Kiwanis meeting. Haymaker is among the youth advocates who work within the Hamilton County schools. Haymaker has brought great value and benefits to Hamilton Heights and its students during her two-year tenure. She serves as a resource and liaison for youth and staff for needed services and referrals. She updated members on the various programs under her leadership that help to promote early intervention, meet needs, address challenging issues and support families.
Some of the programs and activities that are under her leadership include the Kindness Club, Puppy Pound, High School Summer Job Fair, IMPACT Awards, Boxes of Sunshine for faculty and staff and Careers on Wheels for fifth graders among a few.
Hamilton County Youth Assistance program serves as an early intervention advocate for youth ages 3-17 who are facing challenging life circumstances. The organization, through their adult advocates, take a holistic approach to coordinate the community’s vast array of talents, services and resources to help youth and empower parents and caregivers.
Cicero Kiwanis member Karen Stout is spearheading the Cicero Kiwanis’ community blood drive from 3 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23 at Red Bridge Park Community building in Cicero. The community is encouraged to join in this effort to help supply needed blood and blood products for the Indiana Blood Center. Sign up preferred but drop-ins are welcome. Steve Ingram, Indiana Kiwanis Governor and a member of the Valparaiso Noon Kiwanis, attended the meeting to spread the excitement of the 100th Annual Indiana District Kiwanis Convention taking place Aug. 17-19 in Indianapolis. To celebrate Kiwanis 100 years of service, a special weekend designed for all Kiwanis family members and their relatives has been planned. The convention begins on Friday, Aug. 17 with a Kiwanis Family Night at The Indianapolis Children’s Museum. Saturday’s activities feature a tour and picnic at Riley Hospital for Children and a 100 Year Kiwanis Family Celebration. The weekend wraps up on Sunday with the House of Delegates and a breakfast to retire and install the Indiana District Board. Marilyn Pitts, President, Sheridan Kiwanis Club, was present to share that the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus will take place Thursday, May 24 at Sheridan High School. This is the first time the Circus has been to Sheridan in 40 years. The Big Top will be set up at 9:30 a.m. with shows at 5 and 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets are $7 for children (ages 2-12) and seniors (65+) and $10 for adults. Emily Pearson, a member of the Cicero Kiwanis and The Friends of the Hamilton North Public Library, encouraged the group to share information about an upcoming, free education and training session on the life-saving drug naloxone from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30 at the Hamilton North Public Library in Cicero. Jim Ginder, Health Education Specialist, Hamilton County Health Department, returns to Cicero to share how to save lives through administering the opiate antidote naloxone, which is sold under the drug name, Narcan. The session provides the opportunity to learn about this growing problem and the impact on the community.
Participating Jim Dandy’s in Noblesville will be donating 15 percent of all sales to the Cicero Kiwanis Club between 4 and 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 24. Enjoy dinner (eat in or carry out) at Jim Dandy’s and help support the efforts of the Cicero Kiwanis Club at the same time.
