The City of Westfield opened a new Fitness Court Thursday in Asa Bales Park. It is the first of its kind in Indiana and is part of a national campaign to make fitness free.
“We work hard in Westfield to create a place where people want to be,” said Mayor Andy Cook. “The Fitness pad is one amenity that is not only a ‘first’ in Indiana but gives citizens unique, and affordable, ways to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.”
“This installment would not be possible without the hard work of our Westfield Public Works employees who dedicated many hours to this project,” added Westfield Parks and Recreation Superintendent Christopher McConnell. “We invite all residents to come to the park, see it first hand and get in a good workout!”
The installment follows the design from the Nation Fitness Campaign (NFC). NFC was founded with the vision of providing free and easily-accessible fitness to communities around the world. The Fitness Court is an outdoor bodyweight circuit training system designed for adults of all ages and fitness levels. It features 30 individual pieces of equipment, shock-resistant sports flooring and accommodates up to 28 individuals using the court at the same time.
Westfield-based ThriveFit gym, on hand at Thursday’s opening for a demonstration, is offering classes at the Fitness Court throughout the summer. The equipment combines a series of full-body exercises and provides a seven-minute/seven-movement workout that can adapt to work for anyone. The ThriveFit classes will teach proper technique and encourage residents to use the equipment independently.
