Softball roundup: Tigers pick up county wins

The Fishers softball team won two games against Hamilton County opponents to start the week.
Fishers overcame a sixth-inning deficit to beat Carmel 5-4 in a Monday game at the Tigers’ field.
Both teams scored a run in the first inning. Sophia Derziotis got the Greyhounds on the board with a right field double to send Sarah Goddard home. The Tigers answered when Brooke Benson hit a home run over the center field fence.
Carmel moved ahead 2-1 in the top of the third after Goddard scored on an error. Fishers tied it back up in the fifth inning, after Courtney James smacked a triple to get Kristi Gordon home.
In the sixth inning, the ‘Hounds jumped ahead 4-2. Stormy Kotzelnick hit an RBI double to score Sydney Fox, then Megan Nichols was sent home by Maddie Searles’ single. But the Tigers took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Benson scored on an error, then Jade Frye doubled in Maddie Wellington to tie the game. Sara Bumps’ left field hit sent Frye home and gave Fishers the lead.
Benson and Frye both finished the game with two hits, including one double. Alexis Hall pitched three innings for the win, with Hannah Mays striking out five.
Nichols went 3-for-3 at the plate.
Meanwhile, Westfield dropped a 9-2 game at Cathedral on Monday.
The Shamrocks scored one run each in the first and the seventh innings. Savannah Arvin got the first run, batting in Regan Nickel with a single. The Irish scored three runs in the bottom of the first and held the lead from there.
Rebekah Davidson scored Ashley Swartout in the seventh inning on a single. Swartout and Arvin both went 2-for-4 at the plate.
On Tuesday, Fishers hosted Westfield and won 7-2. The Tigers got on the board right away with three runs in the first inning. Frye hit a double into center field that scored all three runs, with Benson, Wellington and Caroline Bernhardt all getting home.
Benson made the score 4-0 in the third inning with a solo home run. The Shamrocks got on the board in the top of the fourth, as a fielder’s choice from Swartout scored Reghan Oland. After that, Emily Revercomb made a sacrifice bunt to send Nickel home.
The Tigers added three runs in the sixth inning. Courtney James knocked a triple to center field to score Sydney Milburn and Gordon. Diane Abbott then hit a sacrifice fly to send James home.
Benson and Sara Bumps both finished with two hits, while Frye totaled three RBIs. Mays pitched a complete game for the win.
Carmel beat North Central 9-8 on Tuesday.
The Panthers scored in the bottom of the first inning, but the Greyhounds let loose for seven runs in the top of the third. Nichols batted in the first run, sending Fox home. Nichols then scored after Searles reached on error, then Kotzelnick got home on an illegal pitch. Goddard then singled in Searles.
Brooke Bair was next, and her left field hit sent Goddard home. Bair would steal home a few plays later. Fox came back up, and she hit a center field single to score Ariana Zdobylak.
North Central cut the score to 7-4 in the bottom of the third, but Carmel pushed the lead back to 8-4 when Goddard hit a sacrifice fly to score Kotzelnick. The Panthers poured in four runs in the fifth inning, and the score would stay 8-8 until the eighth inning.
Kotzelnick broke the tie by sending a home run over the center field fence. That was all the ‘Hounds needed, as Searles went three-up, three-down in the bottom of the eighth to end the game.
Kotzelnick and Fox both had three hits, with Kotzelnick also scoring three runs. Cate Harden got the pitching win.
Fishers is 13-6 and travels to New Palestine today for a 5:30 p.m. game. Westfield is 6-13 and hosts Hamilton Heights at 5:30 p.m. today. Carmel is 10-11 and next plays Friday at Terre Haute North.

‘Hawks overwhelm Eastern

Sheridan overwhelmed Eastern 21-3 in a five-inning game Tuesday at Biddle Park.
The Comets scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning, but the Blackhawks poured in nine runs in the bottom of the first. Lauren Railer and Cassie Vargas both collected four hits, with Vargas batting in six runs and Railer driving in four. Sydney Neff and Jayden Warren both scored three runs.
Audrey Reed pitched three innings for the win, striking out five and allowing one hit. Bre Bouse threw the other two innings, also giving up just one hit.
Sheridan is 8-7 and travels to Tri-West today for a 5 p.m. game.

No. 10 Royals beat Anderson

Hamilton Southeastern beat Anderson 6-1 in a Monday game.
The Royals, back in the Class 4A poll at No. 10, scored four runs in the third inning to take control of the game. Nicole Dillow smacked a home run into center field, scoring herself and Ahliza Moore. Minutes later, Jordan Rager hit a left field homer, also getting Abby Taylor home.
Southeastern added two more runs in the fourth inning. Dillow singled into center field to score Kennedy Morgan, then Taylor connected on a base hit to get Moore home.
Taylor went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Dillow was 2-for-3 and totaled three RBIs. Jaylah Guilliam pitched a complete game, striking out nine and allowing four hits.
The Royals are 16-5 and host Richmond at 6 p.m. this evening.

‘Blazers on two-game win streak

University beat Faith Christian 16-1 in five innings on Monday.
The Trailblazers started the game strong, scoring 10 runs in the first inning. With the help of strong pitching from freshman Kendra Stevens and sophomore Abby Martin behind the plate, the Trailblazers played tough defense to keep Faith Christian to only one run the entire game.
With hot bats throughout the game, the Trailblazers scored five runs in the second inning and one run in the fourth.
University beat Crispus Attucks 15-3 on Tuesday, giving the ‘Blazers a 5-8 record, their best in program history.
Sophomore Abby Martin pitched the first four innings for the Trailblazers with junior Tatiana Dunipace behind the plate and freshman Kendra Stevens pitched the last inning.

Millers softball picks up two wins

Noblesville picked up two wins early this week, first powering its way to an 11-7 win at Class 3A No. 4 Yorktown on Monday.
The Millers were ready to go from the first at-bat: Abby Brown hit a home run to get Noblesville up 1-0 immediately. It was the first of four homers for the Millers.
In the third inning, Ella White scored Chloe Tragesser on a center field hit, then Julia Furiak batted in White with her own center field single. Noblesville continued to roll in the fourth inning with two more home runs: Grace Smith cracked the first one, a solo score over the right field fence. Then after back-to-back singles from White and Emily Minett, Furiak hit a three-run homer to clear the bases.
Furiak hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning, also sending Minett home. Finally, Tragesser and Smith hit back-to-back RBI singles in the seventh inning, with Kyliegh Lowry going home first, then Tragesser scored on Smith’s center field single.
Smith and Furiak both had three hits, with Furiak batting in six runs total. Madison Taylor pitched four innings for the win, striking out seven and allowing just one hit. Baily Ryan struck out five in three innings.
On Tuesday, the Millers beat Brownsburg 5-3. Noblesville had to wait until the fourth inning to get on the board, but it was worth it: Smith hit a solo home run.
Smith struck again in the sixth inning, knocking another solo homer into center field. Taylor then sent a two-run home run over the center field fence, also scoring Ella White. In the seventh inning, White drove in a run on a center field double, which got Brown home. Brown finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate.
Taylor pitched a complete game for the win.
The Millers are 12-8 and host Tipton on Thursday.
