Carmel got off to a fast start, and that carried the Greyhounds to their fourth straight win on Wednesday.
Carmel beat Metropolitan Conference opponent Lawrence Central 4-0 at Hartman field. The ‘Hounds scored three runs in the first inning: Alex Brooks was walked on to first base, then moved to second on a Will Richter single. That brought up Jack Van Remortel, and he hit a double into right field to score Brooks and Richter. Van Remortel would later steal home for the inning’s third run.
Van Remortel hit a solo home run in the sixth inning. He finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate and drove in three runs.
Drew Olssen pitched a complete game, striking out 10.
Carmel is back to .500 in the MIC at 5-5, and is 7-10 overall. Next up for the Greyhounds is a trip to Loeb Stadium today for a 6 p.m. game with Lafayette Jefferson.
Golden Eagles edged by Panthers
Guerin Catholic lost a 5-4 game at Park Tudor on Wednesday.
The Panthers never trailed, scoring three runs in the first inning. The Golden Eagles scored their first two runs in the fourth inning; Owen Hargrave and Wes Gingerich both got home on wild pitches.
Park Tudor scored two more runs in the sixth inning, then the Golden Eagles got two more in the top of the seventh. Brendan Downey got home on a Jake Andriole double, then Keenan Taylor was walked in; Bennett Ely drew the base-on balls.
Hargrave also hit a double in the sixth inning and would finish 2-for-4 at the plate. Guerin stole seven bases in the game, with Downey making three of them. Gingerich, Hargrave and Keenan Taylor all made two steals.
Max Engelking pitched four and two-thirds innings, striking out three.
The Golden Eagles are 8-7 and play at Cardinal Ritter on Saturday.
‘Hawks win two HCC games
Sheridan won a Hoosier Heartland Conference game 9-6 at Clinton Prairie on Wednesday.
The Blackhawks scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Caine Spencer got the first run, scoring on an RBI groundout from Cameron Hovey. Sean Speck would then smack a triple to send Lane Leonard home.
In the top of the third inning, Zach Mannies hit a sacrifice fly to score Jake O’Hara. That put Sheridan up 3-1, but the Gophers poured in four runs in the bottom of the third to lead 5-3.
The Blackhawks took the lead back for good in the fifth inning, scoring six runs. The first run came on a single by Cameron Hovey that sent home Cole Cummings. Next up was Speck, who hit his second triple of the game to score Leonard, Corbin Went and Hovey. That put Sheridan in front 7-5.
Jacob Vita hit a sacrifice bunt that sent Speck home. The Blackhawks’ final run was a ground ball RBI from Luke Chesney that scored Kyle Archer.
Speck went 4-for-4 at the plate and drove in four RBIs. Leonard and Archer both had three hits. O’Hara also hit a double, while Archer stole three bases. O’Hara got the win, striking out eight.
On Tuesday, Sheridan rolled past Tri-Central 17-1 in an away HHC game. The Blackhawks were on top from the very beginning, as O’Hara hit a solo home run in the first at-bat. Sheridan scored at least three runs in each of the first four innings, including eight in the second inning alone.
O’Hara finished the game 3-for-3, scoring two runs and totaling three RBIs. Mannies also homered in the second inning, a three-run score that also got O’Hara (who hit a triple) and Leonard home. Hovey hit two doubles; he and Chesney each drove in two runs. Went scored three runs, with Vita and Cummings both scoring twice.
Speck pitched three innings for the win, striking out eight.
Sheridan is now 3-3 in the conference and 6-3 for the season. The ‘Hawks play University on Friday.
Heights overwhelmed by Cass
Hamilton Heights was overwhelmed by Lewis Cass 12-1 in a five-inning Hoosier Conference game Wednesday at the Huskies’ field.
Heights scored its run in the first inning when Gabe Reel’s sacrifice fly scored Cole Meyer. The Kings tied the game with a third-inning run, then let loose for 11 runs in the fifth inning. The Huskies were held to two hits, one each from Meyer and Sam Fulton.
“Tonight we just ran into a better team,” said Heights coach JR Moffatt. “Coach Greg Marschand is a hall of famer and they (Cass) played like a top tier 2A team tonight. Their fifth inning at the plate was as good as I’ve seen any team in the last three years. They put up double digits and every ball was hit as hard as you can hit it. It was impressive really. It was 1-1 and before you could blink it was game over. I told our guys that sometimes you just have to tip your cap to your opponent and say ‘well done.’”
Heights finished Hoosier Conference East play at 4-4 and is 8-7 overall. The Huskies host Western Boone on Friday.
Tigers fall to Columbus East, McCutcheon
Fishers lost an 11-2 game at McCutcheon on Wednesday.
Both teams only had three hits apiece heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. However, what started as a pitcher’s duel quickly turned into a blowout loss for the Class 4A No. 3 Tigers.
The Maverick leadoff batter singled to start the fifth inning. The next batter laid down a bunt, and the Tigers tried to force out the lead runner at second base. However, the runner beat the throw leaving runners at first and second with no outs. The Mavericks took advantage of the momentum from that play scoring five runs in the inning with runners reaching on a hit batter, a walk, two errors, and a single.
Albright (3-2) suffered the loss allowing five earned runs on five hits. Albright struck out eight in five innings.
The Mavericks would extend their lead to 11-2 in the sixth inning before Alex Klotz worked out of the jam in the sixth recording three outs from the four batters he faced.
The Tigers finished the game with only three hits: An RBI double from Kiel Brenczewski, an RBI single from Matthew Wolff, and a single by Nick Lukac. Brenczewski’s double extended his school record hitting streak to 20 games.
On Tuesday, the Tigers dropped a 12-10 slugfest to Columbus East. Both teams combined for 22 runs on 28 hits. Neither team made a defensive error meaning all the runs in the game were earned.
The Tigers outhit the Olympians 16-12, but the Tigers left the bases loaded in three different innings and had the tying run on second with one out in the seventh inning. After trailing by scores of 7-2 and 12-5, the Tigers mounted a comeback rally scoring eight runs in the final three innings, but they fell just short as the final two Tiger batters struck out to end the game with runners on second and third bases.
Alex Jamieson led the way for the Tigers finishing 4-for-4 with two doubles, 3 RBIs, a walk, and two runs scored. Craig Yoho was also perfect on the night finishing 3-for-3 with a walk, a hit by pitch, and two runs scored. Jack Roudebush and Nick Lukac both contributed a two-hit night and three RBIs. One of Roudebush’s hits was a two-run double. Kiel Brenczewski also contributed an RBI double in the game. JJ Woolwine, Ben Burton, Matthew Wolff, and Grant Whetsel all contributed one hit each.
Tristan Baker (1-1) made his first start of the season, pitching three and a third innings allowing six earned runs on four hits. Owens struck out three in his one and a third innings of work.
Fishers is 15-6 and hosts Carmel on Friday.
