Baseball roundup: Huskies complete sweep of Northwestern

Hamilton Heights earned a Hoosier Conference sweep of Northwestern on Wednesday, beating the Tigers 4-1 in an away game.
The Huskies scored their first run in the first inning, when Sam Fulton’s RBI groundout got Cole Meyer home. Sam Wahl got an RBI groundout in the third inning to score Luke Theiser.
Heights added two more runs in the sixth inning. Cobe Koors sent a single into left field to get Evan Warner home; Warner was pinch running for Ike Peterson, who had gotten on base with a double. A little later, a single by Meyer single sent Issiac Hickok home.
Meyer and Koors both finished the game with two hits. The Huskies were very active on the bases with six steals.
“This week couldn’t have started better for us, two conference wins against a very good team,” said Heights coach JR Moffatt. “It moves us to 7-4 with Pendleton and Clinton Prairie coming the next two days. We also control our own destiny for second place in the eastern half of our conference. We will have two huge games with Lewis Cass next week. They are a top 10 2A team so they will be a load to handle.
“I do like where we are right now though. A lot of improvement in the last week throughout our lineup. Maybe what I like most is that we haven’t even come close to peaking yet and we are still playing pretty well. As our confidence grows I believe we can become a pretty dangerous team. One pitch, one inning, one game at a time.”
Fulton pitched a complete game, striking out six and allowing just two hits.
“Sam was really dominant tonight. When he is hitting his spots he is really tough to deal with. He has good command of all of his pitches and when he’s throwing like that it makes coaching pretty easy.”
Heights is 4-2 in the conference. The Huskies will travel to Pendleton Heights today for a 5:30 p.m. game.
