Ignite Studio to hold second annual Make-Off Competition

Showcasing the variety of wonderful, artful things a person can create in its makerspace, Ignite Studio at the Fishers Library will hold its second annual Make-Off. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 29 at the Ignite Studio located in the Fishers Library, 5 Municipal Drive.

Selected artists will compete to make an original piece of art related to Ignite equipment, kits, or other in-house materials to highlight the creative possibilities involved in making. Artists will be given six hours to complete a work of art which will culminate in the awarding of monetary prizes. Visitors will be able to watch the process of creating art, take part in hands-on activities, and participate in public maker challenge. The first 50 patrons to attend will even receive free art kits!

“Ignite Studio is excited to hold its second annual Make-Off,” Ignite Studio Arts Engagement Coordinator Kris Hurst said. “The Make-Off is a great opportunity for patrons to see local artists at work and get inspiration for their own creative art-making endeavors using equipment and supplies found in Ignite Studio.”

This year’s theme is abstract art: using the building blocks of art. Abstract art, in this competition, involves the breaking down of art into its primary elements: dot, line, shape, form, color, value, space, and texture. The focus is on the building blocks of art rather than the fidelity to the subject seen in traditional, realistic landscapes, portraits, and still life. Abstract art makes no effort to capture the real world perfectly, frequently prioritizing the conveyance of emotion or meaning through gestural mark making. Abstract art pieces can serve as an investigation of the elements of art.

Interested visual artists had between Jan. 28 to March 3 to submit their application to be considered to compete in the Make-Off and ten artists were chosen. Winners will be selected by a panel that includes past winner Craig Helming. All work will be displayed in the Fishers Library Lobby Gallery from April 5 to May 16.

All ages are invited to join us for this unique opportunity to witness the artistic process at work, while participating in your own art projects. Visit ignite.hamiltoneastpl.org for more information.
