Boys swimming: Carmel dominates swim sectional, Noblesville’s Kless wins diving

The Carmel boys swim team dominated its own sectional last week.

The 10-time defending state champion Greyhounds swept all 11 of the swimming events while claiming the sectional title. Carmel had 12 additional swims beat the state cut time in their respective events, giving the ‘Hounds 23 swims at Friday’s state preliminaries at the IU Natatorium.

William Allen was a double winner in the 200 and 500 freestyle races, leading 1-2-3 finishes in both events. Allen won the 200 in 1 minute, 37.19 seconds, then took the 500 free in 4:23.31.

Yi Zheng also picked up two victories. He led a 1-2-3 finish in the individual medley, winning with a time of 1:47.64. Zheng later won the backstroke in 55.98 seconds.

Other Carmel winners were William Pugh in the 50 free (21.33), Andrew Shackell in the butterfly (47.11), Carter Hadley in the 100 free (45.75), where he led 1-2-3 sweep, and Anderson Kopp in the backstroke (48.96), also leading a 1-2-3 Greyhounds parade to state.

Carmel also won all three relays, with each race finishing well below the state cut time. Other Greyhounds state cut qualifiers are: Ethan Zhang and Lewis Zhang in the 200 free, Cory Han and Michael Gorey in the IM, Pugh and Eddy Zhu in the butterfly, Ethan Zhang and William Lathrop in the 100 free, Kopp and Lewis Zhang in the 500 free, and Han and Hadley in the backstroke.

Carmel divers Henry Summers and Alrik Mansberger finished second and fourth respectively in that event, both qualifying for the Fishers regional on Tuesday.

Noblesville placed second as a team. The Millers’ Aiden Kless dominated the diving event, scoring 517.05 points to easily win. The Millers also qualified both their medley and 400 relay teams to state under the cut time.

Westfield finished third in the team standings. Garreth Thomas qualified under the cut in two events, the individual medley and the butterfly. Thomas hit the butterfly cut time right on the nose at 50.96 seconds.

Guerin Catholic’s Sam Holl had the Golden Eagles’ best finish, placing fourth in the 500 free.
