It wasn’t easy, but Fishers earned a Mudsock and Hoosier Crossroads Conference sweep on Friday.
Playing a doubleheader at HSE’s Ken Seitz Field, the Tigers toughed out a 10-8 win in the first game, then beat the Royals 12-2 in five innings in the second game. Fishers is now 5-1 in HCC play.
“I thought we played really, really well,” said Fishers coach Matthew Cherry. “We’re swinging really well right now.”
Both teams scored three runs in the first inning. The Tigers went first: JJ Woolwine scored on a passed ball, Craig Yoho got home on an error, then Kiel Brenczewski’s single scored Grant Richardson.
Southeastern’s turn. The Royals only needed one swing to tie, as Jacob Daftari sent a three-run home run into left field. Anthony Eggers and Greyson Droste also scored.
Fishers got back on top 5-3 in the third inning, when Matt Wolff’s double sent Yoho and Richardson home. The Royals got one back in the bottom of the inning: Greyson Droste hit a solo homer.
Southeastern tied the game at 5-5 in the fourth inning when Michael Dillon got home after Eggers reached on error. But the Tigers took control in the fifth: Richardson singled in Yoho, then later scored on an error. Alex Jamieson’s then connected on a two-run shot, with Wolff the other run scoring.
The Royals threatened in the sixth inning. Daftari singled home Eggers and Matt Buckingham, then Zach Boyle’s hit scored Cam Bolling and sent Daftari to third. But Wolff got a strike out for the next out.
The final run of the game came in the top of the seventh, when Jamieson’s sacrifice fly scored Richardson. Wolff then pitched a perfect bottom of the seventh to secure the win.
“We were in a dogfight, but our guys kept battling, faced a good pitcher and kept battling,” said Cherry.
Yoho finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Jamieson totaled three RBIs. Starting pitcher Jon Vore threw five strikeouts in three and one-third innings; AJ Waltermann got the win.
Daftari drove in a total of five runs for HSE.
In the second game, the Royals scored their runs in the top of the first inning (Fishers was the designated home team). Boyle singled in Eggers, then Daftari’s sacrifice fly scored Boyle.
The Tigers had to wait until the third inning to start getting runs, but they came fast and furious after that. Fishers scored four times in the third. Ben Burton got the first run, going in after Richardson was hit by a pitch. Kiel Brenczewski drew a walk to score to Woolwine, Wolff’s single sent Yoho home, and Tristan Baker scored when Daniel Owens was hit by a pitch.
Brenczewski smacked a three-run home run in the fourth inning, also scoring Woolwine and Richardson. That put Fishers up 7-2. The Tigers added five more runs in the fifth: Jack Roudebush’s triple sent Grant Whetsel and Owens home, then scored on Burton’s RBI groundout. Brenczewski ended the game with a two-RBI double, scoring Woolwine and Yoho.
Brenczewski totaled six RBIs on 2-for-3 hitting, while Woolwine was 2-for-2 and scored three runs. Yoho and Baker both scored two runs. Richardson struck out nine will pitching all five innings and only allowed two hits.
The Tigers are 9-3 overall and host Mount Vernon on Tuesday. Southeastern is 3-7 and plays at Pendleton Heights on Tuesday.
