What’s the best way to put a run-rule loss behind you? Get a run-rule win.
The Hamilton Southeastern softball team did that on Friday, beating rival Fishers 10-0 in six innings to claim the Mudsock Trophy. The Royals poured in nine runs in the final half of the game to not only pick up the trophy, but also a victory in their first Hoosier Crossroads Conference game of the season.
Southeastern was coming off a 19-8 loss to New Palestine, the No. 1 team in Class 3A on Thursday, so HSE coach David Cook was pleased with how his team responded on Friday.
“Last night we got beat by a very good team,” said Cook. The coach said New Pal has a potent offense, and also noted that Fishers has some big hitters as well. But Cook credited his team with keeping the Tigers’ offense in check.
“We bounced back,” said Cook. “Jaylah Guilliam threw well and I thought we hit the ball extremely hard.”
Ahliza Moore got the Royals on the board in the third inning with a solo home run over the left field fence. Moore was back at the plate in the fourth inning, and she sent a single into left field to score Libby Ratliff and Kaelin Wincek.
That brought up Nicole Dillow, and she cracked a three-run homer, also scoring Abbey Willmann and Moore. Just like that, it was 6-0 Southeastern.
The Royals scored their remaining four runs in the sixth inning. Lillian Leiner’s double into right field got Holly Hosfield and Moore home. Jordan Rager singled in Dillow, then Leiner scored on an error to end the game.
Dillow went 3-for-3 at the plate, while Moore was 2-for-3. Both scored three runs and drove in three runs. Rager also was 2-for-3.
Guilliam pitched a complete game, striking out three while allowing just three hits and one walk.
Courtney James, Sara Bumps and Jade Frye each had one hit for Fishers.
“It’s hard when we don’t hit, either,” said Tigers coach Bridget Langan-Puckett. “They had some nice hits. We had some errors, but they hit the ball.”
Southeastern is 4-3 and will host Eastern Hancock at 6 p.m. Monday. Fishers is 3-5 and welcomes Lawrence North at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
