It won’t be long before you’ll be able to hear the clanging of horseshoes in Biddle’s Memorial Park in Sheridan.
The Sheridan League will be celebrating another year of one of the world’s oldest sports. It was a way of passing the time with discarded horseshoes. Today pitchers use forged shoes of different styles but of established measurements. Since its glory days the sport has decreased in time. Some people say that the sport is dead.
The league uses a handicap system developed by Arlo Harris of Speedway, Indiana in 1949. The system helps level the playing field for men and women of all abilities. The league has people that had never thrown a horseshoe before who come to find the sport is a great amount of fun.
This year the league will hold three open tournaments for people of all pitching abilities. O’Reilly Auto Parts will sponsor its second annual tournament in July.
The league will have its organizational meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1. Rain or shine, you can find information, as some of the members will be at the courts between 9 and 11 a.m. Saturday, April 21, where those who are interested can come out and get acquainted.
