Two Fishers teenagers that are two of the country’s top youth javelin throwers begin a new track and field season next week and embark on their quest for national titles.
Last summer, Olivia Norris won the national championship and was named All-American at the 2017 Amateur Athletic Union National Junior Track and Field Championships in Detroit. Norris, an honor-roll, eighth-grade student at Riverside Intermediate-Junior High School in Fishers, threw 87’10” to claim the AAU gold medal. Her personal record is 92’5” with the 600g javelin. Norris was the national runner-up girls javelin thrower at the 2015 USATF National Junior Track and Field Championships.
Sam Brodt, a freshman at Hamilton Southeastern High School in Fishers, finished third in the country in capturing the bronze medal and was named All-American at the 2017 Amateur Athletic Union National Junior Track and Field Championships in Detroit with a throw of 139’2”. Brodt also competed nationally on the USATF circuit, winning both the USATF state and regional titles before finishing 13th at the national meet in Lawrence, Kan., with a throw of 139’3”. His personal record is 143’9” with the 600g javelin.
Both are members of the Fishers Fire track and field club, part of the Hamilton Southeastern S.P.O.R.T.S. organization. Norris and Brodt are coached by Paul Bishop: 317-332-8714.
The javelin event is not sanctioned as an outdoor track and field event through the Indiana High School Athletic Association. Norris and Brodt choose to specialize in this event; seek coaching and training throughout the state and nation; and compete at the national level through the United States Track and Field Association and the Amateur Athletic Union.
