Volleyball: Blackhawks runners-up at Heartland Conference tourney, Millers see mixed success at Lawrence North Invite, Greyhounds win one game at own Invite

The Sheridan volleyball team finished as runner-up in the Hoosier Heartland Conference tournament last Saturday.

The Blackhawks beat Delphi 25-9, 25-15 in the first round. Trinity Parkin led the offense with eight kills, followed by Lainey Mendenhall with seven, Kenzie Garner with five, Adria Jump with four and Amiyah Doss with two. Meredith Krupp served four aces, while Nova Cross, Jump, Parkin and Garner all hit one ace. Jump dished out 19 assists.

Cross paced the defense with seven digs, Krupp made four, Parkin collected five and Garner had four. Garner made three solo blocks, Parkin and Mendenhall both had one solo and one block assist, and Jump made one solo block.

Sheridan came back to beat Rossville in the semifinals, 16-25, 25-20, 15-11. Parkin again led the hitting with 12 kills, while Mendenhall put down six kills. Jump and Garner both had four kills while Cross and Doss each hit three. Jump and Parkin served two aces, while Cross and Mendenhall each served one. Jump handed out 23 assists.

Krupp had a solid defensive game with 14 digs, as did Parkin and Jump with 10 digs each. Cross made eight digs and Mendenhall collected five. Jump had four block assists, Garner had one solo block and three block assists, while Parkin, Mendenhall and Doss all had one block assist.

The Blackhawks lost to Eastern in the championship match, 25-18, 25-23. Mendenhall and Parkin both hit five kills, Garner had three and Cross had two. Mendenhall served three aces, followed by Jump and Parkin with two and Garner with one. Jump dished out 13 assists.

On defense, Krupp collected 12 digs, with Cross making seven. Parkin and Garner both had five digs. Parkin and Mendenhall each made one solo block, while Garner and Jump both had two block assists.

Sheridan finished the regular season 17-10, its best record in school history. The Hawks travel to Taylor on Thursday for the first round of Class 2A Sectional 39, where they play Taylor at 8 p.m.

Noblesville finished 2-2 at the Lawrence North Invitational last Saturday.

The Millers got victories over Perry Meridian in two sets (set scores not available) and New Albany in a sweep, 25-16, 31-29. Noblesville lost to Homestead 25-21, 25-22 and Southwood 25-17, 23-25, 15-12.

The Millers finished the regular season 20-11 and play Fishers Thursday in the first round of Class 4A Sectional 8 at Westfield.

Carmel hosted its own Invitational last Saturday, going 1-3 at the event.

The Greyhounds fell to Floyd Central 25-20, 25-22; Mount Vernon 25-23, 13-25, 15-13; NorthWood 25-11, 15-25, 15-12 before beating Plainfield 25-17, 25-18.

Carmel finished the regular season 9-20 and plays Zionsville Thursday in the first round of Sectional 8 at Westfield.
