Miriam Frances (Millikan) Haskett

November 1918 – April 1, 2018

Miriam Frances (Millikan) Haskett, 99, Westfield, passed away on April 1, 2018 at Summer Trace of Carmel. Frances was born to Arza and Mary Boone Millikan in November 1918 at home in the family farmhouse in Sheridan. Frances and her older sister, Margaret, were so inseparable that when Margaret went to first grade Frances went too. She graduated in 1936 from Sheridan High School. They had a hard but also idyllic country life – feeding chickens, gathering eggs, helping in the big garden and picking wild berries. Church and school functions were highlights.

Frances was an exceptional student and won a scholarship to Ball State College. Although the hard times of the Depression prevented her from completing her degree, Frances was a lifelong learner and a voracious reader. On January 7, 1939, she married her high school sweetheart, Robert Haskett, Jr., and they enjoyed almost 65 years of marriage. Frances and Bob and their children moved to Westfield and shared a home with Bob’s parents. Frances was the clerk-treasurer for the town of Westfield. She then worked at the Westfield Gas Company for 30 years as a bookkeeper. During retirement, she volunteered as secretary for the Hamilton County Horseman’s Association.

Frances’s love of God was the bedrock of her life. She was a member of the Westfield Friends Church through which she touched many lives. She taught Sunday school, was a member of the United Society of Friends Women, and quietly helped so many who were in need. Frances and Bob aided with resettlement and housing to families from Latvia and from Vietnam. Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, her many nieces and nephews and all those who know her have all been influenced by the compassionate and caring way Frances lived her life.

Frances is survived by daughter, Kae Haskett Andry (Bob), Ocala, Fla.; sons, Daniel Haskett, Westfield, and Sam Haskett (Janet), Carmel. Frances is also survived by six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings; Margaret Millikan McKinley, Betty Millikan and Clark Millikan; and by her husband Bob on January 4, 2004.

We are all so blessed to have known and been loved by a very special lady.

The family is especially grateful for the caring support from the staff at Sanders Glen where she lived over 10 years, Assisted Living of Summer Trace, and Great Lakes Hospice.

Donations can be made in honor of Frances Haskett to the United Society of Friends Women c/o the Westfield Friends Meeting.

Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at the Westfield Friends Meeting, 324 S. Union St., Westfield, with visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will immediately follow at Summit Lawn Cemetery in Westfield.
