Softball: Guerin drops first game

Guerin Catholic dropped its first game of the season on Thursday, falling to Bishop Chatard 12-2 in a five-inning Circle City Conference game.
The Trojans jumped ahead early, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning, then added another run in the third inning. The Golden Eagles scored both of their runs in the top of the fourth, when Madelyn Buckner hit a two-RBI single to score Elizabeth DiBlasio and Ana Macha.
But Chatard answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, then scored three more to end the game in the fifth on the 10-run rule. Macha finished the day 3-for-3, including a double, while Buckner was 2-for-2.
The Golden Eagles are now 2-1 and host Pike on Monday.

‘Hounds fall to No. 2 Lebanon

Carmel kept fighting Thursday before eventually falling to Lebanon, the No. 2-ranked team in Class 3A, 6-4 at the Cherry Tree Softball Complex.
The Tigers led 5-0 midway through the fourth, but the Greyhounds got on the board in the bottom of that inning. Brooke Bair hit a single to send Sarah Goddard home.
After Lebanon added another run in the top of the fifth, Goddard got Carmel going with a three-RBI double. Goddard’s left field hit sent Ariana Zdobylak, Megan Nichols and Stormy Kotzelnick home. Unfortunately, that was as close as the ‘Hounds would get.
Zdobylak finished the day 2-for-3. Cate Harden pitched a complete game, giving up five hits against two strikeouts.
Carmel is now 1-3 and off for Spring Break. The Greyhounds return to action April 10 at Center Grove.
