Fishers opened its season at Taylor University Monday by beating Homestead 5-4.
The Class 4A No. 1 Tigers (tied with Cathedral) received timely hitting to overcome 11 strikeouts at the plate. With the bases loaded in the third inning, Grant Richardson delivered a one-out, two-run single to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
After relinquishing the lead in the top of the fourth, the Tigers responded scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good. Alex Jamieson reached on an error to start the inning. One out later, Ben Burton delivered his second double of the game. Both courtesy runner Collin Shelton and Burton scored on wild pitches. With two outs in the fourth, Craig Yoho connected on a solo homerun to round out the Tiger scoring.
Burton finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and was in the middle of both of the Tigers run scoring innings. Yoho finished 2-for-3 with a walk and a home run. Richardson contributed a hit, a walk, and two RBIs.
Luke Albright worked the first two innings of the game, striking out two, and allowing one earned run on one hit. Jon Vore pitched a perfect 1-2-3 third inning. Richardson earned his first victory on the mound. Richardson pitched two innings, striking out three, and allowing two earned runs on one hit.
AJ Waltermann threw a scoreless sixth inning allowing one hit while striking out two, and Tristan Baker earned his first save of the season allowing one earned run on one hit in the final frame.
The Tigers return to action Friday when they make their annual trip to Murfreesboro, Tenn. to play four games against Tennessee teams.
‘Hounds fall to Brebeuf
Carmel gave it a battle at Hartman Field Monday before falling to Class 3A No. 6 Brebeuf Jesuit 7-4 in the opener for both teams.
The Braves scored in the top of the first inning, but the Greyhounds took the lead in the bottom of the first by scoring two runs. Drew Kelly’s line drive single sent both Jared Greene and Jack Van Remortel home.
Brebeuf scored two more runs in the third to go ahead 4-2, and never trailed again. Carmel’s other two runs came in the fifth inning, on a Jackson Adams single and a fielder’s choice from Kelly, who finished the game with three RBIs.
Drew Harding hit a double for Carmel. Van Remortel scored two runs. Zach Vogt and Aiden Bradbury each threw three strikeouts.
