State Rep. Tony Cook’s (R-Cicero) legislation helping schools address their immediate financial needs with additional funding flexibility is moving to the governor for consideration as a new law.

Cook said school funds are separated into three categories, including education, operations and rainy day. The education fund is used for all expenditures related to student instruction and learning, while the operations fund is used for maintenance of buildings, utilities, bus repairs and any other necessary operations.
Cook’s proposal would allow money to move between these funds for expenditures. Unused money at the end of the year could be transferred back to the rainy day fund.
“Schools are not only responsible for educating students, but also have to wisely manage their finances,” Cook said. “If my proposal becomes law, all schools could better address their needs based on their unique circumstances.”
