The IHSAA swimming post-season began on Thursday with the girls sectional preliminaries.
At Noblesville, Carmel began its quest for a record-extending 38th consecutive state championship by advancing all 27 of its swims into the “A” heat (championship heat) Saturday’s sectional finals. The Greyhounds claimed the top seed in all 11 events.
Molly Sweeney is the first seed in the individual medley and breaststroke, while Alex Shackell earned the top seed in the butterfly and backstroke. Other Carmel top seeds are Lynsey Bowen in the 200 freestyle, Faith Gorey in the 50 free, Grace Dougherty in the 100 free and Alexandra Ward in the 500 free.
The host Millers sent 23 swims into the championship heat, with their other four qualifying for the “B” (consolation) heat. Maya McDonald had the top finish for the Millers, earning the second seed in the breaststroke. Noblesville’s 200 free relay team of Olivia Motz, Mia Field, Katie Sutton and Kyra Blackwell took second as well.
Westfield advanced 17 swims to the “A” heat, with its other 10 swims reaching the “B” heat. The Shamrocks had two relays get second: Eliana Hill, Nora Sperry, Macy Brown and Maggie Alley in the medley relay and Kate Cassidy, Macy Brown, Isabella McNally and Greta Smith in the 400 free relay.
Guerin Catholic got its medley and 400 free relay into the “A” final, with the 200 free relay one of 11 swims reaching the “B” final. The Golden Eagles’ medley relay team of Maggie Schlick, Katie Scott, Kalen Moe and Molly Deppen were seventh.
Positions 1-8 qualify for championship finals, positions 9-16 qualify for consolation finals, positions 17 and 18 are alternates.

Over at the Hamilton Southeastern sectional, Fishers qualified all 27 of its swims into the championship heat. Emily Wolf earned a top seed in the butterfly and Avery Stein will be seeded first in the breaststroke.
The host Royals sent 25 swims into the “A” heat, with their other two swims qualifying for the “B” heat. Kiley Zoeller picked up two top seeds, in the 100 and 50 freestyles. Mia Henderson is the first seed in the 200 free, Audrey Crawford is the top seed in the IM and Naomi Haines earned the top seed in the breaststroke.
Hamilton Heights advanced 10 swims to the “A” heat, including a 1-2 finish from Teegan Madara and Ayla Madara in the 500 free. The Huskies also have six swims in the “B” heat.
