WESTFIELD – Thursday was Senior Night for the Westfield swim teams, so it was time for a little fun – at least for the seniors.
Shamrocks coach Darrick Thomas explained that the team allows the seniors to put together the meet lineup, “so it’s an unusual lineup in a lot of ways,” said the coach.
The unusual lineup didn’t affect the team, though, as Westfield still swept the meet against Guerin Catholic. The Shamrocks girls won 132-50, while the boys were 133-50 winners.
“Team spirit was outstanding, so it’s always good to have a great atmosphere to send our upperclassmen, our seniors out on,” said Thomas.
Westfield’s girls won 10 of the 12 events, including a double victory for Gracie Alley in the individual medley and the 100 freestyle. Other winners were Macy Brown in the 200 free, Nora Sperry in the 50 free, Kate Cassidy in the butterfly, Ellie Hill in the 500 free and Maggie Alley in the backstroke. The ‘Rocks swept all three relays as well.
Guerin Catholic got wins from Anna Ososki in diving and Katie Scott in the breaststroke.

In the boys meet, Westfield placed first in 11 events. Eight different Shamrocks won individual races: Garreth Thomas (IM), Ben Morse (50 free), Noah Flynn (diving), Luca Barbosa (butterfly), Zach Welch (100 free), Will Chambley (500 free), Henry Pham (backstroke) and Griffin Barents Froman (breaststroke). Westfield also swept all three relays.
Sam Holl won the 200 free for Guerin Catholic.
“I thought my kids did great tonight,” said Golden Eagles coach Abby Maroney. “They’ve been battling a lot of illness. They’ve been working pretty hard. We just came off Christmas break training. We had a lot of big drops tonight and I’m extremely proud of how they performed.”
