On Nov. 16, the Westfield Intermediate School Beginning Band gave its first concert. Comprising over 170 sixth graders, the band showcased skills the young musicians have learned on their instruments since the beginning of the school year. You can watch the concert on YouTube at tinyurl.com/WIS6thbandNov2023. Assistant Superintendent Dr. John Atha served as the emcee.
According to Band Director Chris Sluder, all students had no previous experience when they began in August. The concert included songs from the band book, as well as a piece of real sheet music that required multiple parts to be played simultaneously. Students meet for class daily as well as for smaller groups. Band Directors Chris Sluder and Phil Ward co-teach all classes.
