33 Variations by Moises Kaufman revolves around a musicologist recently diagnosed with ALS, her relationship with her daughter, and her male RN. The play is written to compare the life of Beethoven in the years 1819-1827, his illness and hers, and his struggles with writing the 33 variations on Anton Diabelli’s waltz theme.
