According to Carmel Police Lieutenant Joe Bickel, four police officers and two fire fighters suffered smoke inhalation and burns as they attempted to rescue the occupants of the car. Bickel says the police officers and firefighters will make a full recovery, at least physically.

“They used fire extinguishers and other means trying to get the fire out during the rescue attempt,” said Bickel.

“Sometimes the end result is very tragic even though you put forth an effort to help save lives,” said Bickel.

Police identified the passenger as Jeanne Feasel, 75, and the driver as William Feasel, 76.

Jeanne, the passenger, died on Monday at St. Vincent’s Hospital, while William, the driver, died Tuesday at Eskenazi Hospital.
